CUSEC Outstanding Postgraduate Surgical Education Award

About the Award:

The CUSEC Outstanding Postgraduate Surgical Education Award is a biannual national award that recognizes a surgical faculty member who has shown exceptional commitment to and excellence in postgraduate surgical education in Canada. Winners of this award are selected from nominees identified in a nation-wide process. The award was first presented in 2020.

Purpose: To recognize outstanding contribution to postgraduate surgical education in Canada.

Eligibility: The achievements must have occurred in Canadian postgraduate surgical education.

Nominations:

Nominations may be made by anyone involved in postgraduate surgical education (e.g. teacher, trainee). Each nomination must have at least one seconder.  Nominations must include reasons for nomination. See below checklist for the CUSEC Outstanding Postgraduate Surgical Education Award checklist for documentation to include in your nomination.

Deadlines: Eligible nominations must be completed and received by: 2024 deadline TBD . The award is given every two years; the next award will be granted in 2024.

Checklist for the application process:

1. Two letters of support from:

a. Chair of Surgery sending the nomination;

and either:

b. Faculty Member with knowledge of the candidate’s achievements; OR

c. Program Director or Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education or Associate Dean of Postgraduate Surgical Education

2. Documents indicating important contributions made to Postgraduate Surgical Education at the medical school

3. Faculty appointment exceeding 5 years

4. Current or previous membership in the Postgraduate Surgical Education Committee or Surgical Foundations or Surgical Residency Training Committee or Competency Committee within the Department of Surgery

5. National and/or international involvement and recognition for innovation in postgraduate surgical education

6. Recipient of teaching awards (university based and/or national)

7. Evidence of research in postgraduate surgical education and/or publications relating to surgical education

8. Current curriculum vitae (CV) with statement of teaching philosophy

9. Teaching dossier (if not included in CV)

Award Committee: A three person committee will consider nominations and recommend a successful candidate to the Chair of the CASC for final approval prior to the award presentation.
