SPEAKERS

Susan D. Moffatt-Bruce, MD, FRCSC, PhD, MBA, MBOE, FACS

Dr. Susan D. Moffatt-Bruce, MD, FRCSC, PhD, MBA, MBOE, FACS joined the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as Chief Executive Officer in January 2020. She is also the interim Chief Executive Officer of Royal College International.

Dr. Moffatt-Bruce is an academic leader and surgeon, with sharp business acumen and a passion for value-driven care. Dr. Moffatt-Bruce completed her undergraduate degree at McGill University, and medical school and residency in General Surgery at Dalhousie University. She undertook a PhD in Transplant Immunology at the University of Cambridge, England, and completed her Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at Stanford University, California. She earned her Masters of Business Operational Excellence and her Executive Masters of Business Administration at the Fisher College of Business at the Ohio State University.

Prior to the Royal College, Dr. Moffatt-Bruce served as executive director at The Ohio State University (OSU) Wexner Medical Center University Hospital. As the OSU Wexner Medical Center’s inaugural chief quality and patient safety officer, she led data analysis, transparent reporting of outcomes and process improvement for a seven-hospital academic medical center. Dr. Moffatt-Bruce and her team were celebrated for their success in developing and implementing a learning healthcare system across the patient care continuum.

A funded health outcomes research scientist and surgeon, Dr. Moffatt-Bruce is a lifelong learner and has used her skills to help develop curriculum for residents and faculty around quality and outcomes research as the educational enablement of learning healthcare systems. She has been the Principal Investigator of an AHRQ P30 program entitled Institute for the Design of Environments Aligned for patient safety (IDEA4PS) that could elevate a learning healthcare system so to improve clinical alarms surveillance, digitally hot spot clinical infections and improve patient communications using EMR portals. She is now a faculty member of the Department of Surgery and Professor at the University of Ottawa, where she is committed to enabling learning cycles, resulting in value-based care.

Dr. Moffatt-Bruce has a deep commitment to GS1, a neutral, not-for-profit association that develops and maintains global standards for efficient and value-based healthcare. Her involvement includes being a board member of GS1 Canada, board Vice-Chair for GS1 US, and a member of the Global GS1 Nominating and Governance Committee.

Glen Bandiera, BASc, MD, MEd, FRCPC

Dr. Bandiera has degrees in Engineering/Management Science (Waterloo), Medicine (McMaster) and Education (OISE/UT). He completed an Emergency Medicine Residency with advanced training in Trauma Resuscitation at McMaster University. Glen served for ten years as a staff emergency physician and Trauma Team Leader at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. He then completed two 5 year terms as Chief of Emergency Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital, the last seven years of which he concurrently served as Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education at the University of Toronto where he has the rank of Full Professor.

Dr. Bandiera currently holds the position of Executive Director of Specialty Education at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Select past national positions include Chair of the Accreditation Committee and Emergency Medicine Specialty Committee of the Royal College, President of the Canadian Association For Medical Education; and founding Director of the Canadian Association for Medical Education Foundation.

Glen’s contributions to institutional governance include past membership on the Boards of Directors of St. Michael’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health Science Centre in Toronto. He currently serves on the Shaw Festival Board of Directors in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, University of Toronto Governing Council, and CPSO Council.

Gerald M. Fried, MD, FACS, FRCSC,

Dr. Gerald Fried is Professor of Surgery, Associate Dean for Education Technology & Innovation, and Director of the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning at McGill. He is also Clinical Director of the Clinical Innovation Platform (CLIP) of the RI-MUHC, a unique facility created to solve unmet clinical needs through innovation. Previously Dr. Fried served for 10 years as Chair of the McGill Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief of the McGill University Health Centre. His research is in surgical simulation and application of artificial intelligence for education and quality improvement.

As Department Chair at McGill, he reinvented the graduate program in Experimental Surgery attracting more than 200 students in basic sciences, global surgery, education, innovation, and surgical recovery. The Deans of Canadian Medical Schools awarded Dr. Fried the “John Ruedy Award” for Innovation in Medical Education and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada awarded him the Duncan Graham Award by for his outstanding contribution to medical education. In 2019 he received the Meritorious Service Cross by the Governor General of Canada in recognition of his leadership in the development of Minimally Invasive Surgery in Canada.

Dr. Fried has served as President of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons, SAGES, Central Surgical Association, and as Chair of the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons. In 2011 he was elected to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He has given over 300 invited lectures internationally and published widely on minimally invasive surgery, innovation, and surgical education.

Fred Saad, CQ, MD, FRCS, FCAHS

Fred Saad is Professor and Chairman of Urology and Director of Genitourinary Oncology at the University of Montreal Hospital Center (CHUM), in Montreal, QC, Canada. He holds the Raymond Garneau Chair in Prostate Cancer Research and is Director of Clinical Research and the Molecular Oncology Research Laboratory in Prostate Cancer. 

Prof. Saad’s research interests include novel therapeutics in prostate cancer, molecular prognostic markers, and mechanisms of progression. He has over 40 clinical and basic research projects ongoing and has received over CAD 40 million in research grants. Prof. Saad currently sits on 15 steering committees of ongoing international clinical trials and serves on several guideline committees. 

He is an active member of the Canadian Urological Association (CUA), the American Urological Association (AUA), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), and the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons (AAGUS), and has held several leadership positions including President of the CUA and Chair of the National Cancer Institute of Canada genitourinary group (NCIC G-U) and the Canadian Uro-Oncology Group (CUOG). Prof. Saad is the recipient of numerous awards and honours including Lifetime Achievement Awards from the CHUM Research Center and the Quebec Urological Association (QUA), The Distinguished Contribution Award from the American Urologic Association (AUA) and was elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He was named a Knight of The National Order of Quebec, the highest honour given by the Government of Quebec. 

Prof. Saad has played a leadership role and been co-author of many of the practice-changing clinical trials and publications in advanced prostate cancer over the last 25 years. He is a member of several editorial boards, including Lancet Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Nature Urology and Cancers. Prof. Saad has published over 750 peer-reviewed articles, and with an h-index of 138 with over 95,000 citations he is listed as one of the world’s most-cited scientists.

Najma Ahmed, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FACS

Dr. Ahmed completed Medical School and General Surgery Residency at McGill University. She holds a PhD in Surgical Infections and Sepsis. Following Residency, Najma pursued fellowship training in Trauma Surgery and Critical Care at the University of Michigan and the University of Toronto.

Najma was recruited to St. Michael’s Hospital in the Division of General Surgery in 2001. Her clinical focus and practice is in Acute Care Surgery, Trauma and Critical Care. She has been committed to clinical training processes and outcomes since the beginning of her career. From 2008 until 2018, Najma was the Residency Program Director for General Surgery, responsible for the largest and arguably most complex surgical training program in North America. Under her leadership, the program was known for its stellar clinical and academic training, diversity and engagement of trainees.

Najma holds the positions of Vice Chair of Education, Department of Surgery at University of Toronto and Professor of Surgery. In this role, she provides visionary leadership for training success for medical students, residents and fellows, as well as career success of surgeon-teachers within the Department of Surgery. Her contributions to post graduate surgical education have been recognized by numerous awards, including the prestigious Royal College AMS/Donald Richards Wilson Award in 2016.

Her scholarly activities relate to Resident duty hours, Resident wellness, the application of a competency based framework to surgical training and gun violence prevention. Dr. Ahmed has been an Examiner as well as a Clinician-Educator at the Royal College.

Dr. Ahmed is a member of the Board of a grass roots organization called Canadian Doctors for Protection from Gun. She recently was awarded the CMA Canadian Medical Association, Sir Charles Tupper Award for her work on physician advocacy related to gun violence prevention.

Najma has provided trusted leadership as Surgeon-in-Chief at St. Michael’s Hospital over the last many months, and especially during the unprecedented period of the COVID19 pandemic.
